'Pieces' of Diamond!!

Very recently, The Recording Industry Association of America announced the Jewel's debut album, 'Pieces Of You,' has sold more than 10 million copies, certifing it as a diamond seller (10 x platinum).  In fact, it has sold more than 11 million copies!  Even better.. Proof that good music is timeless.. //Update (10/30)\\ The fact that 'Pieces of You' has now sold 11 million copies puts it in a tie for the 4th best selling album by a female artist, ever!  In front of her are:  Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill with 17mil, and Whitney Houston's S/T debut and Shania Twain's Come On Over, both having sold 13mil copies.  She's tied with another Shania album, The Woman in Me, which has also hit the 11 million mark.

Jewel Vid Complete!

As almost everyone here knows, Jewel's long awaited home video project was officially completed several weeks ago after almost a year of constant work & production by Bibi, West, Frank & the extremely talented Jewel Video Team. It'll be well worth the wait! Fans will find this project insightful, educational, extremely fun & captivating from beginning to end!

The home video, titled "Jewel: A Life Uncommon", features an hour of vintage archival footage of Jewel's life both on & off the road as well as four complete song performances filmed earlier this year in Los Angeles at a private benefit concert for Jewel & Nedra's humanitarian foundation Higher Ground For Humanity.

"Jewel: A Life Uncommon" focuses on Jewel's life both on & off the road since mid 1995 & features plenty of never before seen footage from various stages of her career. Included are home movies from her early solo performances at Java Joe's in San Diego, her first US band tour in 1996 & classic clips from the struggle of her first European Tour. There's also plenty of "behind the scenes" footage at home, on the bus, in hotel rooms, in rehearsals, at video shoots & of course, on stage during this years Spirit Tour.

Of particular note, is the incredible concert footage from the HGH Benefit in Los Angeles earlier this year. Included are complete performances of unreleased favorites "Down" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" in highly electrified form with the 1999 band. Also included is a phenomenal performance of "Barcelona"; a version which truly captures a peak moment of this years tour.

Also of interest are brief interview segments with Nedra, Shane, Atz Lee, Keith Anderson & Ron Shapiro explaining how various key events in Jewel's life & career REALLY happened. Fans will gain new insight & achieve new levels of understanding of Jewel's work by watching this video & have a very enjoyable time in the process.

Much of the "behind the scenes" footage will surely amaze even the most hardcore knowledgable fans. Things the public never sees, such as the offstage comradarie of Jewel & her band, songwriting with Steve Poltz & Jewel's relationship with Atlantic Records are all explored.

Footage of the incredibly difficult 1997 European Tour will surely astound American fans. A sequence of Jewel creating the song "Last Dance Rodeo" in an unheated hotel room in Norway truly captures "the muse" as its spark hits & the chorus of this unreleased fan favorite reveals itself to Jewel for the first time. A priceless moment captured for posterity.

But enough on giving away content. On to what you really want to know - When will "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" be released?!

You won't have to wait much longer! We're releasing it on Tuesday, November 2nd, to coincide with the release of Jewel's Christmas album. You'll be able to order "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" right here direct from JMerch beginning at Midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on Monday evening November 1st/2nd. It'll also be available in stores beginning November 2nd.

We knew "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" was going to be a wonderful project, but the results have far exceeded our wildest expectations. Now we anxiously await your reactions!

'Life Uncommon' Details

As part of Jewel's ongoing effort to raise awareness and to benefit Higher Ground For Humanity's Clearwater Project, a very special single was released on Tuesday, October 12th. The single, a newly recorded version of "Life Uncommon" features accompaniment by a small orchestra & choir conducted by Arif Marden. This remarkable recording took place during recent rehearsals for Jewel's "Sessions At West 54th Street" Christmas Special, which will be broadcast
nationwide on PBS in December.

A message from Jewel & Lenedra:

"The people on the earth cannot possibly be healthy if our planet is not
healthy - we depend on this planet for our entire sustenance. The
alarming decrease in availability of pure, safe water threatens the core
of our existence. We cannot survive without the vital resource of water.
The problem is now quite advanced in most impoverished areas, and in
many of our rivers and oceans. Even in most of our cities we buy bottled
water.
The human being has a vital role in the stewardship of our earth and we
must awaken more fully to our responsibility. Working together we can
all address this problem effectively. We are involved because something
can be done."

     Jewel Kilcher & Lenedra Carroll

'Sessions At West 54th' Taping

From www.jeweljk.com.. Thanks MrBB!

It was the end of summer in NYC, but a few of Jewel's music industry friends & a few hundred EDAs (aka Jewel's online fans) & their guests celebrated the holiday season in style last night, while Jewel recorded PBS's renowned "Sessions At West 54th Street" at Sony Music Studios in NYC.

Jewel treated the respectful & extremely attentive audience to a thorough sneak preview of her upcoming album "Joy-A Holiday Collection". Performing with a chorus comprised of eight of NYC's best choral singers, a mini-orchestra (including Harp & Tubular Bells) as well as the studio band on the album, Jewel charmed & joked with everyone including her conductor for the evening, legendary producer & arranger Arif Marden.

Following a brief introduction by songwriter & "Sessions at West 54th host John Hiatt, Jewel began the evening with " "Joy To The World". Seasonal favorite "O Holy Night" followed. Jewel's mother Nedra Carroll then joined Jewel singing harmony on "Silent Night". "Winter Wonderland" followed. Jewel then wowed everyone in the room with a breathtaking performance of "Ave Maria". Much to everyone's delight, she performed this again improving on the previous take. Two versions of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" were next & then Nedra performed two duets with her daughter: "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" & a false start & then complete "Face Of Love".The first part of the show concluded with a gospel medley comprised of "Go Tell It On The Mountain", "From A Distance" & "her own very appropriate composition "Life Uncommon".

After a few minutes of technical changes & Jewel chatting with attendees, the performances continued with another Jewel & Nedra duet on "I Wonder As I Wander". Next up was an aria that Jewel composed in Latin titled "Gloria" that left many in awe of her vocal abilities. Following this amazing performance was two takes of "Little Town Of Bethlehem" & a new arrangement of "Hands" that had much more spiritual impact, thanks to the powerful chorus & orchestration.

At this point, Jewel explained that the next piece was being recorded as her contribution to an upcoming benefit CD for Net Aid. She then performed a brand new orchestrated gospel flavored version of "Life Uncommon" independant of the previously mentioned medley. Due to a technical problem, everyone was treated to this a second time. The "official taping" concluded with second takes of "Gloria" & "Joy To The World". The musicians & chorus then exited to a heartfelt ovation.

Following a hilarious interlude where Jewel located nail clippers & then projected her nail clippings into the extremely close audience, she strapped on her acoustic guitar & joked with the EDAs briefly. She then performed her first two hits "You Were Meant For Me" & "Who Will Save Your Soul", neither of which have been performed solo in quite some time. Although time had run out, Jewel convinced the crew to allow her one more song for the EDAs. She squeezed in two; the unreleased favorites "Sometimes It Be That Way" & "Grey Matter".

This special Christmas edition of "Sessions At West 54th Street" will be broadcast in part nationwide on most PBS stations this December.

Jewel Teams Up With Target

Beginning the second week of August, Target Stores started to display four exclusive organic Jewel shirts for back to schoolers. Look for the display with Jewel's picture in the girl's section. The natural, white, green and twilight colored baby doll style and three other designs were created just for the Target chain. These shirts are limited and once they are gone that's it.

This is the first time Target has ever featured an organic t-shirt. With this back to school special, Jewel's shirts have kept 15,000 pounds of chemical fertilizers and pesticides from entering the food chain.

Also, in conjunction with an exclusive Target Stores promotion for "back to schoolers", Atlantic Records released a special Jewel CD titled "Bits & Baubles" on Wednesday, July 28th. This CD contains seven tracks including previously unreleased live performances & selections from Jewel's poetry CD "A Night Without Armor". The cover features a Jewel portrait taken by photographer West Kennerly. You'll also find humorous original artwork including a caption written by Jewel inside.

The Track listing for "Bits & Baubles" includes three live performances from the VH1 special aired earlier this year: "Jewel Rockin' The Rockies". This was recorded at the Higher Ground For Humanity Launching at Aspen's Wheeler Opera House on January 22nd of this year. Target stores is donating $75,000 toward HGH global community projects.

Live tracks included are "Innocence Maintained", "Who Will Save Your Soul" & "Cold Song". Poetry readings include "As A Child I Walked", "Insecurity", "Lost" and "Miracle".

And one more Target-Jewel connection:  Jewel is on the cover of the Target family magazine located near the front of most Target stores.  The cover photo is from the US magazine photo shoot from 1997.
